Known as one of Manila’s most talented artists, Jappy Agoncillo’s love affair with art started when he learned how to draw from his uncle, who was a comic book artist. His love for the discipline started at an early age, and never waned as he grew older. Even as he switched gears to take up pre-law in college, he continued to passionately work on his art.
Last February, Axe Philippines, the world’s no. 1 male fragrance brand, launched Project You, a series of masterclasses to help young men discover and work on something they’ve got.
The third in a series of four, Art Wars, Jappy’s masterclass, gave a glimpse of the street art landscape and showed aspiring artists what it’s like to create for brands without compromising their personal style.
“I’m very excited to be working with Axe on this because I get to make art with some of the most creative minds. Following the success of the previous masterclasses of Chef Nicco and Curtismith, Axe You is such a good platform for men to work on their passions,” he says.
Held on May 26, Art Wars started with Jappy sharing his story about how he got in the industry and how he continues to grow and perfect his craft.
He then called in Illustrator Kayo Cosio to talk augment his discussion on how to turn art into a sustainable means of living. After which, Jappy introduced the much-anticipated challenge.
The task was to apply the participant’s learnings while creating an art piece with the theme of passion. The piece needed to incorporate Axe’s logo, bottle image, and battlecry: You got something. Work on it. And the difficulty lay in ensuring that participants didn’t lose their vision while fulfilling the client brief.
Each participant had two hours to complete the challenge, with Jappy giving tips and advice along the way. As the timer came to a stop, participants were asked to step away from the panels and explain their work.
After a thorough deliberation, Henrick Dulin was declared the winner of the challenge, as he showcased his creativity and skill best with his work.
He will go on to collaborate with Jappy on his next big artwork, which will be displayed in the historic Escolta district in Manila.
